Today I am sharing a very simple recipe made with tofu. It is pan fried tofu marinated in soy sauce, red chillies and garlic. Tofu has been one of those ingredients that I always wanted to try but had been very skeptical since there have been numerous sources claiming soy is bad for health. But then, I do not consume soy or soy based products very often. It is very popular amongst vegans as it is low in calories and has large amounts of protein.
I bought an extra firm variety of tofu (Nasoya brand) which I found at the produce section. The texture is very similar to Indian cottage cheese or paneer and the tastes meaty. Since it was the first time I was trying this recipe, I decided to go with a very simple recipe. In this recipe, I have used red chilli flakes which can easily be replaced with any hot chilli sauce or Sriracha(my favorite). If you are looking for a sweeter taste, you could also add maple syrup or honey. It goes very well with veggie stir fry over brown rice; just cut them into lengths and add it to stir fry or salad. I actually think it tasted better after a day as it got firmer in the refrigerator.
organic extra firm tofu, half a packet
garlic, finely chopped, 4 cloves
red chilli flakes, 1/2 tablespoon
low sodium soy sauce, 1/4 cup
sesame seed oil, 1 tablespoon
- Mix the soy sauce with minced garlic and red chilli flakes and let it rest for 5 minutes. Taste the marinade and add salt only if needed as soy sauce already contains salt.
- Meanwhile, dry the tofu in between paper towels very well. Cut it into thin slices and dry them again. This is a very important step if you are looking for a crispy outer texture.
- Marinate the tofu in soy sauce mixture for about 20-30 minutes.
- Lightly grease a cast iron pan with sesame seed oil. Add the tofu slices and cook on each side until browned and/or slightly charred.
